Special Project: The Development of a Girl Scouts Fly Fishing Badge
Several women's fly fishing clubs sponsor clinics for Girl Scout troops.
Each of these clubs has contributed to the development of common
instructional materials for use in recommending the creation of a Fly
Fishing Merit Badge by the Girl Scouts. An IWFF committee, headed by Ellen
King at armstrongellen@msn.com is working with the National and Regional
councils of the Girl Scouts toward the establishment of such a badge. |
| -The Fly Girls of Michigan have an impressive week long camp with a
curriculum that includes all aspects of fly fishing, including rod building.
Each girl leaves with a rod that she built and fly fishing skills. Contact
Jennifer at matukajenn@yahoo.com .
|
| -The Colorado Women Fly Fishes sponsor "Get Hooked On Fly Fishing". One of
the instructors is a former IWFF president, Craige Stainton. Their clinics
include instruction in knot tying, fly tying, entomology, casting, safety,
etiquette and gear. With completion of a required number of exercises, a
participant receives a Sports For Life patch. Contact
iwffclc@colowomenflyfishers.org .
|
| -The Chesapeake Women Anglers sponsor a similar program. One of their
instructors is Norma Kawecki. The clinics are for Brownie and Junior Scouts
and include an art project. Contact angla56@msn.com .
|
| -Women In Waders in SC have day long clinics called Girl Scouts Go Fly
Fishing for about 25 Junior Girl Scouts. After instruction in the different
skills for fly fishing, each girl receives a booklet with information on
fishing terms, safety, entomology, and things to do like visiting a fish
hatchery and fly shop, observing fish and insects while sitting near a
stream. Contact Ellen King, at armstrongellen@msn.com .
|
| -The Reel Ladies Fly Fishing Club of Virginia sponsors an event each March
called Reel Kids. They provide instruction in all the needed skills of fly
fishing. In 2004, they gave certificates to a troop of Girl Scouts who
attended. They hope to expand this course to Richmond. Contact Catherine
Stone at reellady@mindspring.com .
|
| -Other clubs with similar programs are Ladies In Wading in NY and Midwest
Women Fly Fishers Network. Contact
