INTERNATIONAL WOMEN FLY FISHERS
Kern River Rendezvous 2008 |
|
The Kern River has been designated as wild and scenic. This river is a freestone river with lots of pocket water and last winter’s fishing was very good. There are a lot of large fish in the river 5-8 lbs. There is also a 4 mile section of water that is designated catch and release. This part of the river is only fishable by hiking. The trail is good however. You will have to walk at least 30 minutes to get to good water. Otherwise all fishing can be done by driving to different spots along the highway and parking. Lake Isabella is also available for those who might want to do some lake fishing. Unless there is an afternoon hatch most of the fishing will be nymphing. There is a stonefly hatch this time of year and on warm afternoons a caddis hatch. Gear needed: · 5 weight rods with floating line, 5x leaders · Flies – woolies, pheasant tail, hair’s ear, bead heads, copper johns, stimulators and a fly developed for the area called the Kern emerger. They will be available. · Waders with felt or studded soles and a wading staff is a must! · Be prepared for any weather. We can have some nice days, rain or snow in March · Camera – we want to do a slide show at dinner on Saturday night. · Poison Oak – if you are susceptible, be prepared. Some areas are thick with the stuff!
Thursday afternoon March 6th · Check into local hotels, B&B’s or an RV park (make reservations on your own). · Registration at an early evening dinner and cocktail party as well as an orientation of the Kernville area and how to fish the river.
Friday March 7th · Fish all day – there are guide services available – take pictures for Sat night show · For the adventurous a day hike on the section of river above the Johnsondale Bridge 1-3 miles for wild rainbows and brown trout · Fishing on Lake Isabella pending. I am working on members with boats.
Saturday March 8th · Breakfast and lunch on your own · Fish all day – take pictures for slide show at dinner · Dinner Saturday night as a group - slide show with pictures from the weekend
Sunday March 9th
·
Check out – breakfast as a group or fishing
I am excited to host again this fun spot to fish year round. If you attended last year, bring a friend this year. Please contact me for information regarding lodging. On Friday there will be a hike for the adventurous and I am also hope to have a couple members of Kern River Fly Fishers with boats available to take a few fishing on Lake Isabella. Weather will be a big factor with this. We need more pictures like this one for 2008!!
